orfix Compostable and Sustainable Films: A Specialist Solution

A specialist solution for organic, artisan and sustainability-led brands. orfix NJB Packaging produces and converts compostable film in Maynooth, Ireland, as a deliberate niche route, not a drop-in replacement for recyclable plastic.

The range covers two material families: home-compostable cellulose and industrially compostable PLA, and the end-of-life route differs between them (see the specifications below). Compostable is chosen here for a genuine compostability commitment and a credible end-of-life story. Where extended shelf-life or proven kerbside recycling matters more, a recyclable mono-material route is the honest answer, and the qualification blocks below are written to help you decide quickly.

  • Heat-sealable on both sides, with an excellent moisture barrier on cellulose grades and a good barrier to gases and aromas
  • Dead-fold characteristics and inherent anti-static properties for clean line running
  • Renewable raw materials: cellulose from wood pulp, and PLA from fermented plant starch derived from corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp
  • Cellulose grades positioned for home, industrial and anaerobic digestion routes
  • Compostable labels for sealing bags and containers, with adhesive certification to EN 13432 possible in principle and reviewed individually
  • In-house slitting of jumbo rolls to your production width (10 to 400 micron, up to 1600 mm wide), so the reel fits your machine instead of forcing a compromise
  • Resistant to oils and greases, which helps with bakery and similar fresh categories
  • Controlled slip plus excellent transparency and gloss
  • Centre-strip or fully perforated grades let moisture escape while bread cools
  • PLA composts under controlled industrial conditions (T greater than 58C, rh greater than 90%, presence of micro-organisms)
  • Honest trade-off: compostable grades deliver a shorter shelf-life than high-barrier plastics, and OTR, MVTR and shelf-life figures are confirmed on request, depending on product and application

Ireland, and parts of the wider UK market, currently lack the infrastructure to recycle soft plastics, which is the concrete reason compostable flow-wrap and lidding can be the practical lower-impact route in those markets rather than a generic green claim.

PLA is plant-based, made from fermented plant starch derived from corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp, and degrades into CO2, water and biomass under controlled industrial conditions (T greater than 58C, rh greater than 90%, presence of micro-organisms). Cellulose is derived from wood pulp and is suitable for home composting, industrial composting and anaerobic digestion.

We do not place certification logos on this page: certified film solutions, including film-level EN 13432 and TUV, ASTM or DIN CERTCO schemes, are possible in principle, depending on product and production partner, and are reviewed individually. We publish no carbon, OTR, MVTR or shelf-life figures we cannot yet substantiate. Compostable selection is not a catalogue decision. Tell us four things and we match the film: your product and its shelf-life target, your machinery and line, the convenience features you need (perforation, dead-fold, seal) and how the pack should present on shelf. We respond with a material specification, a sample pack where useful, and an end-of-life route that matches the market your product actually sells into. Where a recyclable route is the better fit, we will say so and point you to the mono-PET or mono-PE alternative instead.

None of the certification routes named here are stated as confirmed. For the compostable-label adhesive, certification to EN 13432 and compliance with EC 1935/2004 and FDA 175.105 for direct food applications are possible in principle and are reviewed individually. EU and FDA food-contact approval for the baguette, wicketed and microperforated bag ranges is likewise reviewed individually and confirmed on request. Cellulose grades are positioned for home composting, industrial composting and anaerobic digestion. PLA is industrially compostable only: it composts under controlled conditions (T greater than 58C, rh greater than 90%, presence of micro-organisms) and should not be added to home compost.

Yes. Compostable bags are heat-sealable on both sides, and the cellulose and PLA grades can be matched to lines such as Multivac, GEA, Webomatic and Sealpac after a line assessment of seal temperature, dwell time and web tension.

Minimum order quantities depend on the product, application and production requirements, and vary per grade and format. Exact values are agreed individually, depending on product and application, and we confirm them on request.

Yes. Bags can be supplied printed, including an on-pack compostable logo, or plain. Custom runs are quoted on request.

Certified sustainable packaging is possible in principle, depending on the product line. Whether a specific film and application qualify for the Blue Angel or the orfix GREEN LABEL is reviewed individually.
