The right film has to protect the product through ambient, chilled or frozen distribution, then carry the gloss of a chocolate, the crumb of an artisan loaf or the finish of a filled cake the moment a shopper looks at the pack. We balance both: clarity and shelf appeal, freshness and staling control through perforation, MAP and the right barrier, a clean fit to your line, and an honest read on what each material can and cannot do for sustainability. NJB Packaging has supplied food manufacturers for more than 40 years from Maynooth, Ireland, now Europe-wide through orfix.
Common challenges in bakery and confectionery
What goes wrong when bakery and confectionery are packed with the wrong film? Four problems show up again and again, and each one points back to a film choice the page can route you to.

Clarity and shelf appeal
A dull or hazy film hides the gloss on a chocolate and the crumb on a loaf. For most bakery and confectionery, clarity is what carries the impulse purchase, so the wrong film quietly costs sales at the shelf.

Freshness and staling
Bread stales when it dries out and goes mouldy when it cannot breathe, so there is no single answer. Perforation gives breathable cooling for crusty bread, MAP holds atmosphere around fresh and filled product, and a tuned barrier protects ambient confectionery. Each solves a different problem.

Machinery fit
Horizontal flow wrappers for wrapped product and MAP tray sealers for fresh and filled bakery need different films. The film has to match the line, not the line the film, or you lose throughput chasing seal and web issues.

Sustainability honesty
Not every bakery film can be both high-barrier and fully recyclable or compostable at once. An honest mono-material or compostable route exists where the shelf-life target allows it, and we say plainly where a barrier need still calls for a multi-material structure.
Certified sustainable packaging is possible in principle, depending on the product line. Whether a specific film and application qualify for the Blue Angel or the orfix GREEN LABEL is reviewed individually.
Packaging options for bakery and confectionery
Three primary materials cover most bakery and confectionery, with a specialist compostable route for sustainability-led brands. The decision between the two flow-wrap films is an either-or choice, not a bundle: pick OPP for clarity-led ambient and confectionery, PE for printed, frozen and bread.

OPP Flow Wrap Films
The clarity choice for confectionery, snacks and ambient bakery. OPP gives a glossy, high-clarity wrap that shows the product at its best, runs on horizontal flow wrappers, and is available with micro-perforation and macro-perforation for breathable cooling. Perforation sizes and the exact gauge are agreed individually, depending on product and application.
Example: pralines in a clear OPP flow pack, or a crusty roll and a snack bar in a glossy OPP wrap

PE Flow Wrap Films
The printed, PCR-friendly route for bread, morning goods and frozen or par-baked product. PE flow wrap offers high seal strength, runs freezer-ready for frozen and par-baked goods, and is the print default where the brand needs presence on the shelf. The exact gauge is grade-dependent and agreed individually, depending on product and application.
Example: a sliced loaf or a tray of morning goods in a printed PE flow pack

Tray Lidding Films with MAP and Anti-Fog
For fresh and filled bakery sold on retail trays. The recyclable option is mono-PET, available with anti-fog and laser-perforated grades, ovenable on a compatible tray with the temperature limit confirmed on request, sealing to PP, PE, APET and CPET trays, and MAP-ready for a gas-flushed fresh pack. Anti-fog keeps a clean window over cream and fruit so the pack still sells off the shelf.
Example: a MAP tray of patisserie or cream-filled cakes under a clear anti-fog lid

Compostable and Sustainable Films (specialist route)
A specialist option for organic and artisan brands with a sustainability-led positioning, available in flow-wrap, lidding and pre-made bag formats. Compostable is a deliberate choice, not the bakery default, and we keep the certificate and end-of-life claims honest rather than implying it matches a high-barrier laminate.

Still weighing OPP against PE? OPP is the clarity-led route for ambient confectionery and snacks, while PE is the printed, freezer-ready route for bread, morning goods and par-baked product. The two are an either-or choice for a line, not a bundle. If you are still settling the family, the flow wrap films overview compares OPP against PE before you commit a grade. We help you place the choice where it fits the product and the line.
How we match the right film
How does orfix NJB choose the film for a bakery or confectionery product? We work through four questions, the same needs analysis behind every brief, so the spec is built from your reality, not from a default.

Product type and shelf-life
Ambient, chilled or frozen. Fresh or filled with cream, fruit or chocolate. Crusty bread, morning goods or confectionery. And the target shelf-life in days, which sets the barrier and the format.

Production efficiency
Which line the pack runs on, a horizontal flow wrapper, a MAP tray sealer or a vertical form-fill-seal line for PE, plus your throughput and web width, so the film fits the machine you already own.

Convenience
Breathable cooling through perforation for crusty bread, MAP gas-flush for fresh and filled product, and easy-open or resealable features where the shopper expects them.

Presentation
Clarity and gloss for confectionery, print for brand shelf presence on bread and morning goods, and a clean anti-fog window on retail trays.
Samples and trial quantities are available, and orfix specs the material to the product you actually pack. In-house slitting runs from 10 to 400 micron and up to 1600 mm wide, so the reel fits your line and your custom width rather than forcing a compromise.
