Fresh Meat and Poultry Packaging: From Shelf-Life to Shelf-Appeal

Which packaging protects fresh meat and poultry and still sells it on the shelf? orfix NJB is a packaging partner, not a product supplier: we start from your product, your line and your shelf-life, not from a catalogue.

For fresh and processed protein that means a reliable oxygen barrier for shelf-life, dependable seal integrity, a clean red-meat colour and an honest poultry presentation, all on a film that matches your line. The expertise comes from NJB Packaging in Maynooth, Ireland, with more than 40 years supplying food manufacturers, now available to producers across Europe through orfix.

What goes wrong when meat and poultry are packed with the wrong film? The failures are predictable, and each shows up either on the line or at the counter.

Sustainability pressure

Certified sustainable packaging is possible in principle, depending on the product line. Whether a specific film and application qualify for the Blue Angel or the orfix GREEN LABEL is reviewed individually.

There is no single best film for meat and poultry, only the right film for your product, line and shelf-life target. The options below cover the range, from the longest-shelf-life pouch to the tight-fit shrink pack.

Vacuum bag or thermoforming? For most small and mid-size processors, vacuum bags are the entry: low changeover, no inline investment. As volume climbs, an inline thermoformer is the upgrade, sealing the same protein at line speed. We help you place the cut-over where it pays.

We follow the same four-question needs-analysis we apply to every food-packaging material, so the spec is built from your reality, not from a default.

Industries we already supply

For more than 40 years, NJB Packaging has supplied food manufacturers across Ireland and beyond. As part of orfix International, the same hands-on partnership now reaches meat and poultry producers across Europe.

We start with your product, your line and your shelf-life, not a catalogue. From small butchers to large meat processors, the film is matched by application, not by company size.

Start a Packaging Consultation

A packaging consultation is not a catalogue decision. It starts with your product, your line and your shelf-life goal, and it ends with a material specification you can run.

Gauge depends on product weight and sharpness (bone-in needs more puncture resistance), the machine, and the barrier or shelf-life target. Heavy and bone-in vacuum applications need more gauge, retail trays run thinner lidding. Exact values are agreed individually, depending on product and application. We match the exact gauge from your product and machine, or send a sample.

Yes, machine-ready for the common meat lines: chamber vacuum, thermoforming lines from Multivac, Sealpac, GEA and Webomatic, tray sealers, and L-sealer plus heat tunnel for POF shrink. Send the machine model and we confirm web width, sealing layer and core before ordering.

It depends on material, structure and whether the film is printed. Stock and mono lines start lower, custom-printed and laminated need a larger run. First orders can often get a sample or trial quantity. Exact values are agreed individually, depending on product and application, and we confirm them on request.

Yes: mono-PET lidding and an LDPE vacuum pouch that is recyclable in principle where the application allows. We stay honest where a barrier need still requires a multilayer laminate. Compostable is a specialist option, not the meat default.

Both extend shelf-life by different routes. Vacuum removes oxygen, ideal for primal cuts and bulk protein. MAP flushes a tailored gas mix, suited to retail trays and sliced product where shelf look matters. The exact gain depends on product, gas mix and cold chain. Exact values are agreed individually, depending on product and application, and we confirm them on request.
