For fresh and processed protein that means a reliable oxygen barrier for shelf-life, dependable seal integrity, a clean red-meat colour and an honest poultry presentation, all on a film that matches your line. The expertise comes from NJB Packaging in Maynooth, Ireland, with more than 40 years supplying food manufacturers, now available to producers across Europe through orfix.
Common challenges in fresh meat & poultry
What goes wrong when meat and poultry are packed with the wrong film? The failures are predictable, and each shows up either on the line or at the counter.

Shelf-life and oxygen
Red meat discolours and poultry spoils fast without a reliable oxygen barrier. Vacuum removes the oxygen, MAP flushes a tailored gas mix. Both extend shelf-life, by different routes, and the route has to suit the product.

Machinery fit
Bone-in cuts, primal cuts and portioned trays each need a different line (chamber vacuum, thermoformer, tray sealer). The film must match the line, not the other way around.

Presentation
Blood leakage, fogging and loose film cost sales at the counter. A tight vacuum or a skin-pack presents a clean pack that a shopper trusts.

Sustainability pressure
Multilayer barrier laminates are hard to recycle. We are honest about that: a mono-material route exists where your shelf-life targets allow it, and it is not a fit for every product.
Certified sustainable packaging is possible in principle, depending on the product line. Whether a specific film and application qualify for the Blue Angel or the orfix GREEN LABEL is reviewed individually.
Packaging options for fresh meat & poultry
There is no single best film for meat and poultry, only the right film for your product, line and shelf-life target. The options below cover the range, from the longest-shelf-life pouch to the tight-fit shrink pack.

Vacuum & Barrier Bags
The longest shelf-life in the range for primal and processed meat: PA/PE multilayer with an EVOH option, side-seal for portioned cuts and round-bottom for large cuts, and a recyclable LDPE pouch where recyclability is the priority.
Example: a beef primal in a round-bottom vacuum bag, or salami in side-seal bags

Thermoforming Films
The inline alternative to vacuum bags for high-volume protein lines: a PA/PE deep-draw bottom web with a PA/PE or PET top web, and a skin-pack as the premium variant. Runs on Multivac, Sealpac, GEA and Webomatic.
Example: steaks and mince in a thermoformed pack, or a premium skin-pack on a dark board

Tray Lidding Films
For retail trays of fresh protein where the on-shelf look matters: mono-PET as the recyclable hero, with anti-fog and laser-perforated options, sealing to PP, PE, APET and CPET trays.
Example: chicken fillets in a PET tray with an anti-fog lid

POF Shrink Films
Tight-fit shrink for whole products: cross-linked POF with excellent clarity, running on an L-sealer plus heat tunnel, which is a different machine world from vacuum.
Example: a whole chicken in a POF shrink sleeve
Vacuum bag or thermoforming? For most small and mid-size processors, vacuum bags are the entry: low changeover, no inline investment. As volume climbs, an inline thermoformer is the upgrade, sealing the same protein at line speed. We help you place the cut-over where it pays.
How we match the right film
We follow the same four-question needs-analysis we apply to every food-packaging material, so the spec is built from your reality, not from a default.

Product type and shelf-life
Fresh, processed or for export, bone-in or boneless, and the target number of days on shelf.

Production efficiency
Which line the pack runs on (chamber vacuum, thermoformer, tray sealer or L-sealer) and at what throughput.

Convenience
Whether you need a gas-flush or MAP atmosphere, easy-open features or a guaranteed leak-proof seal.

Presentation
Clarity, the premium look of a skin-pack, and print for brand presence on the shelf.
Samples are available, and we spec the material to the product you actually pack, not to a generic category.
