Every cheese and dairy pack comes down to three decisions, and the same film has to answer all three: the oxygen barrier that holds back mould across hard, semi-hard and soft cheese, the slicing and portioning format that a block, a wedge, a slice and a grated pack each call for, and the shelf presence that earns the sale on a chilled shelf. Production and conversion run in house at the orfix and NJB facility in Maynooth, Ireland. For more than 40 years, NJB Packaging has supplied food manufacturers, and as part of orfix International we now bring that capability to producers across Europe.
Common challenges in cheese and dairy
What goes wrong when cheese and dairy are packed with the wrong film? The problems are familiar, and each one shows up either on the line or at the chilled shelf. Banding (band rolls) is worth naming here too, as a secondary option for holding cheese multipacks together on the chilled shelf.

Oxygen barrier against mould
Without a reliable oxygen barrier, mould takes hold and shelf-life falls short. The barrier level has to suit hard, semi-hard or soft cheese rather than a single default, so the product decides the structure.

Slicing and portioning formats
Blocks, wedges, slices and grated cheese each call for a different pack, so the format decision drives the film as much as the barrier does. A block, a wedge and a slice are three different packs.

Machinery fit
Thermoformers, chamber vacuum machines and tray sealers are three different machine worlds, and the film must match the line, not the other way around. The line you run sets the spec.

Sustainability honesty
Multilayer laminates carry the barrier but are harder to recycle, so we are candid about the trade-off and offer mono-PET where the shelf-life target allows it. We do not pretend every barrier film recycles cleanly.
Certified sustainable packaging is possible in principle, depending on the product line. Whether a specific film and application qualify for the Blue Angel or the orfix GREEN LABEL is reviewed individually.
Packaging options for cheese and dairy
There is no single best film for cheese and dairy, only the right film for your product, your format and your shelf-life target. The three primary options below cover blocks, wedges, slices and portions, with flow wrap as a secondary route for wrapped and multipack formats.

Thermoforming Films
The inline, machine-formed alternative to filled barrier bags for vacuum-packed and skin-pack cheese. A PA/PE deep-draw bottom web pairs with a matching top web, and a skin-pack is available as the premium variant for sliced and portioned cheese. Suited to higher-volume lines that form, fill and seal in one pass.
Example: a cheese block in a thermoformed vacuum pack, or sliced cheese in a skin pack

Vacuum and Barrier Bags
The tightest, longest-barrier pack for block and bulk cheese. Straight-bottom bags are matched to block cheese, with side-seal and shrink options for wedges and portioned cheese, and a recyclable LDPE pouch is the choice where recyclability is the priority and the shelf-life target allows a simpler structure.
Example: a block of cheese in a straight-bottom vacuum bag

Tray Lidding Films
For retail trays of portioned and sliced cheese where the on-shelf look matters. Mono-PET is the recyclable hero, anti-fog grades keep visibility clear on chilled trays, and peel or peel-reseal laminates suit sharing packs, yogurts and desserts. The film seals to PP, PE, APET and CPET trays.
Example: portioned cheese in a tray with an anti-fog lid

Flow Wrap Films (secondary)
A secondary route for wrapped cheese and multipack formats on horizontal flow-wrap lines, where a tight, clear wrap suits the product better than a bag or a tray.
Example: a flow-wrapped cheese portion or a banded multipack
Vacuum bag or thermoforming? For most small and mid-size cheese operations, vacuum bags are the entry point: low changeover and no inline investment. As volume climbs, an inline thermoformer is the upgrade, forming and sealing the same cheese at line speed. Flow wrap is a secondary route for wrapped portions and banded multipacks, see the tile below. We help you place the cut-over where it pays.
How we match the right film for cheese
How does orfix NJB choose the film for your cheese or dairy product? We follow the same four-question needs-analysis we apply to every food-packaging material, so the spec is built from your reality, not from a default.

Product type and shelf-life
Hard, semi-hard or soft cheese, and the target number of days on shelf, with the barrier level matched to both.

Production efficiency and machine fit
Whether the pack runs on a thermoformer, a chamber vacuum machine or a tray sealer, with the format matched to the line.

Convenience and format
Block, wedge, slice or portion, with peel or peel-reseal where a sharing pack helps the product sell.

On-shelf presentation
Clarity and a clean, tight pack, with anti-fog on chilled trays and skin packs for premium slices.
Samples are available, and we spec the material to the cheese you actually pack, not to a generic category.
Industries we already supply
For more than 40 years, NJB Packaging has supplied food manufacturers across Ireland and beyond. As part of orfix International, the same hands-on partnership now reaches cheese and dairy producers across Europe.
We start with your product, your line and your shelf-life, not a catalogue. From small artisanal operations to large producers, the film is matched by application, not by company size.
- Dairies and creameries
High-barrier vacuum and thermoforming film that protects cheese and dairy through a long chilled shelf-life. - Cheese makers
Block, slice and skin formats matched to your cut, with clarity for the retail counter. - Contract packers
Machine-ready film for vacuum, tray-lidding and flow-wrap lines at volume.

Start a Packaging Consultation
A packaging consultation is not a catalogue decision. It starts with your product, your line and your shelf-life goal, and it ends with a material specification you can run. Tell us four things and we match the film to your line: your product and shelf-life target, your machinery and tray or web compatibility, the format and convenience features you need, and how the pack should present on shelf. We respond with a material specification, a sample pack where it helps, and a seal or barrier match against your product, not a price list.
